Cracking of crude oil fractions
Crude oil is vapourised and fed into the bottom of the fractionating column. As the vapour rises up the column, the temperature falls. Fractions with different boiling points condense at different levels of the column and can be collected. Crude oil is a finite resource. Petrol and other fuels are produced from it using fractional distillation. Cracking is used to convert long alkanes into shorter, more useful hydrocarbons. Oil and cracking The majority of our fuels and plastics are derived from oil. Crude oil can be separated into different fractions using fractional distillation. They use a type of distillation called "cracking" the crude oil They use pressure and density differneces to split the heavier portions of oil and the purer fractions
GCSE Science Chemistry (9-1) Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil we look at how the hydrocarbons in crude oil are separated by fractional distillation. Cracking Crude Oil & Alkenes #46
The most valuable fractions for the chemical industry, and for producing petrol, are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, kerosine and gas oil. These are 26 Oct 2015 Thermal cracking of crude oil involves heating the heavier distillates (like asphalt) to temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius, which breaks down ABSTRACT Arabian Light crude oil vacuum bottoms has been fractionated into five high-boiling fractions by wiped film evaporation, and the fractions subjected Heavy petroleum may constitute up to 85% of the crude oil depending on the origin, which makes this process very critical [2]. The source of the large hydrocarbon molecules is often the naphtha fraction or the gas oil fraction from the fractional distillation of crude oil (petroleum). The process of claim 29, wherein 85 wt. % or less of said crude oil and/or crude oil fractions containing pitch feedstock will vaporize at 350° C., and 90 wt. % or less of said crude oil and/or crude oil fractions containing pitch feedstock will vaporize at 400° C., each as measured according to ASTM D-2887. Cracking is the process used to break down large hydrocarbon molecules into small hydrocarbons. The cracking reaction is done for the fractions obtained from the fractional distillation of crude oil. The rate of cracking depends on the temperature and the catalysts present in the reaction mixture. Thermal cracking produces shorter straight chain alkanes from longer straight chains found in gas oils or other crude oil fractions. Free radicals (reactive species with unpaired electrons, but no electronic charge) are the active species that govern thermal cracking reactions. The cracking products, such as ethene, propene, buta-1,3-diene and C 4 alkenes, are used to make many important chemicals. Others such as branched and cyclic alkanes are added to the gasoline fraction obtained from the distillation of crude oil to enhance the octane rating.
