Definition: Inflation rate is the percentage at which a currency is devalued during a period. This is devaluation is evident in the fact that the consumer price index (CPI) increases during this period. In other words, it’s a rate at which the currency is being devalued causing the general prices of consumer goods it increase relative to change in currency value. Here, there has been a double-digit inflation rate since July 2009. That is a fairly long period of time. The marginal dip we have seen in food inflation this week could be the harbinger of change, but still, there is a need to bring down the inflation rate from the 10 percent levels to a comfortable six percent level quickly through monetary measures. If the rate of inflation gets too high, a currency can become virtually worthless. Countries with high inflation rates are generally impoverished. One of the best examples of this was the German hyperinflation of 1923, where things became so bad that people used wheelbarrows for wallets. The inflation rate is the percentage increase or decrease in prices during a specified period, usually a month or a year. The percentage tells you how quickly prices rose during the period. For example, if the inflation rate for a gallon of gas is 2% per year, then gas prices will be 2% higher next year. Inflation is a condition in economy when "Money starts losing its value" it actually means with same amount of money one can buy less of goods now.
