Oil shales range widely in organic content and oil yield. Commercial grades of oil shale, as determined by their yield of shale oil, ranges from about 100 to 200 liters per metric ton (l/t) of rock. The U.S. Geological Survey has used a lower limit of about 40 l/t for classification of Federal oil-shale lands. However, use of oil shale for production of these products is still very rare and in experimental stages only. Some oil shales are suitable source for sulfur, ammonia, alumina, soda ash, and nahcolite which occur as shale oil extraction byproducts. Some oil shales can also be used for uranium and other rare chemical element production. Shale oil is a high-quality crude oil that lies between layers of shale rock, impermeable mudstone, or siltstone. Oil companies produce shale oil by fracturing the layers of rock that contain the layers of oil. Don't confuse shale oil with oil shale. That is rock suffused with kerogen, a precursor to oil. Other land uses include facilities for the treatment and disposal of wastewater; natural gas power plants; and gasoline service stations. The modern energy system is vast. In areas of intense production, land dedicated to oil and gas activity can be very high as a proportion of total land use.

Environmental impact of the oil shale industry includes the consideration of issues such as land use, waste management, and water and air pollution caused by the extraction and processing of oil shale. Surface mining of oil shale deposits causes the usual environmental impacts of open-pit mining. In addition, the combustion and thermal processing generate waste material, which must be disposed of, and harmful atmospheric emissions, including carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. Land use and waste management[edit]. Surface mining and in-situ processing requires extensive land use. 4 Mar 2013 Oil shale is a type of rock that can be burned for energy or fuel. Kerogen that formed from land plants (called humic kerogen) usually has a fracturing ( fracking), while companies extracting shale oil most often use heat.
