Unconventional oil is petroleum produced or extracted using techniques other than the conventional method. Oil industries and governments across the globe are investing in unconventional oil sources due to the increasing scarcity of conventional oil reserves. Unconventional oil and gas have already made a dent in international energy linkages by reducing US energy import dependency. Crude oil is a conventional supply as opposed to oil shale being an unconventional supply that requires further processing through pyrolysis which can be carried out underground or in a retort. The resulting oil is then enriched with hydrogen to produce syncrude, being used as fuel in power stations and other industries. Unconventional crude oil selection and compatibility. Crude selection and compatibility considerations are a critical part of a successful refinery operation. Constantly changing quality conventional and unconventional crudes, as well as mixtures of these crudes, provides an opportunity for refiners to increase profitability. Unconventional crude can be found in many other parts of the globe besides Canada; these include eastern Venezuela, which is home to a huge tar-sandslike deposit called the Faja Petrolífera del Unconventional oils tend to be heavy, complex, carbon laden, and locked up deep in the earth, tightly trapped between or bound to sand, tar, and rock. Unconventional oils are nature’s own carbon-capture and storage device, so when they are tapped, we risk breaking open this natural carbon-fixing system.

Unconventional oil and natural gas production: An umbrella term for oil and natural gas that is produced by means that do not meet the criteria for conventional production. See Conventional oil and natural gas production.

See Conventional oil and natural gas production. These unconventional types of crude oil are known as “opportunity crudes (OCs),” which are characterized by a lower price and poorer quality than conventional oils. Crude oil is the source from which transport fuels and a great variety of chemicals are derived by different physical and chemical processes. Unconventional crude oils With global changes in technology and economy come concomitant changes in the definition of conventional and unconventional petroleum crudes. Generally, today, conventional oil includes light crude oil with natural gas and its condensates, while unconventional oil consists of a wider category, including heavy oil, extra-heavy oil, oil sands, gas to liquids, and other liquids. The continuous decline in the supply of conventional crude oils and an extended period of high oil prices have opened the door to the marketing of unconventional oils (UOs), first, opportunity crudes (OCs) and more recently shale oil. This change in supply affects the quality of the refinery diet, particularly in the case of OCs, which are highly contaminated with heteroatomic species (S, N, O, and metals) or in the case of heavy oils and bitumen, containing large and heavy molecules of Equivalent amounts of GHGs are released by conventional and unconventional fuels at the point of use. Some studies suggest the life cycle emissions for unconventional oil sources are similar to or slightly lower than conventional oil. 22 On average, however, life cycle emissions for unconventional oil are higher. Unconventional Oil refers to crude oil that is not produced by traditional extraction methods. This includes but is not limited to offshore, oil sands, and tight oil. View more suggestions Such impurities can include asphaltenes, solids (especially solid fines), sulfur, metals, chlorides, water, salts, and acids. Petroleum compositions can include opportunity crude oil sources such as bitumen, oil sands, and crude oils with a wide range of gravities.
