What is rear differential oil
Differential oil, sometimes referred to as gear oil, is found in the axle housing. It’s thicker than engine oil and is designed to perform under high pressure (gears mashing together, hydraulic nature of clutch packs) rather than high temperatures like engine oil. Differential oil, or gear oil, for all intents and purposes is a type of motor oil. What sets differential oil apart from normal engine oil is that it is specifically formulated to provide proper lubrication for the gears in the differential of a car, truck or sport utility vehicle. Most four-wheel drive vehicles have both front and rear differentials. Lubricating fluid inside the differential transfers heat away from the gears, helping to preserve the life and performance of your differential. Over time, though, operating temperatures and wear can cause the fluid to break down. I am leaning towards doing the driveline as well even though it’s not on the schedule till 60k. I do tow a small trailer a few times through the year so I figured it wouldn’t hurt swapping the rear differential fluid. The transfer and front diff are rarely loaded but since I’m set up for it I might as well go for it. The rear differential is located in a centered position on the rear axle of a vehicle, between the two rear tires. It's easily recognizable as the bulging center-section on most "live" axles. It has a drain plug to release onld fluid, and most have a separate plug in the top for checking fluid level and refilling it after draining.
The gears are coated with a film of oil that protects the hardened steel layer on their teeth from friction wear. Periodically, the differential gear oil must be checked to be sure there is enough to protect the differential. As a general rule of thumb, you should check your car's rear differential fluid every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.
14 Apr 2017 Drivetrain - 1990 - Rear Differential Oil help! - I'm getting ready to change my rear diff oil. I don't have the original manual for the truck. This is What Is Differential Fluid Change? This relatively simple procedure is similar to an oil change. It's just a matter of taking out the old fluid and replacing it with new The fluid level in the drive axles should be checked at each oil change. Like the manual transmission which is available, the rear axle does not have a dipstick to
The cost of replacing a rear differential depends on the degree of the repairs that need to be done. Just a few parts to replace will cost significantly less than lots of parts to replace. This could run the bill up from the $200-$400 range to $600-$800. Replacing the rear differential entirely costs a whole lot.
2 Mar 2019 Changing the fluid is a very simple process, but it is a little more involved than an oil change. Most vehicles require the rear differential cover be If you are looking for Diff Oil or Differential Oil you're in the right place. Changing the differential oil—it's one of the most-overlooked maintenance tasks on non-FWD light trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars. Because the differential is at the rear and under the car, it

You can just put your finger in and if you get oil on it then it's all good. If you I was about to change my rear differential's oil, but then became a bit confused. Mine is a HAG 205AL one. 1. Is this an open differential or

The differential of a car with rear-wheel drive has its own housing and lubrication system, and front-wheel-drive vehicles include the differential in the transmission housing. Use High-Quality Fluid When it comes to choosing differential fluid for your car, it is always best to use the highest quality fluid that you can afford.
